Pete Severens is the high maintenance city guy in the group. I guess every group has to have one. Well he is it. He cries frequently on the boat and whines about the conditions. He lites cigarettes with emergency flares. He once shot a shark in a drunken stupor with and semi automatic riot gun on the boat. Never hit it once. He also poured fish oil into his boat engines. He is definitely a lover and not a fisherman.
Here is his story:
I have always had a great curiosity and affinity for wildlife. You couldn't keep me out of the woods and the water when I was a kid. However, I find myself changing a little as I grew older. Less hunting and fishing and more photographing and grabbing a chance encounter with wildlife whenever possible.

My fellow teammates think I'm crazy; I'd rather take a picture of a lobster than catch it. I catch and release 20-pound groupers. I must admit to one contributing factor regarding my desire to photograph rather than spear fish, I have almost killed myself twice while spear fishing. The excitement of the hunt supercedes my natural ability to check my PSI gauge. There is nothing worse than running out of air at 80-feet below sea level except maybe doing it twice.

I feel very fortunate to have such good friends as I have on the Dark Island Fishing Team. I know every one of them would risk their life to save mine and that comes in handy when you travel out 100 miles off shore. The adventures have bonded us into great friends.
We share some wonderful glimpses of life and nature. We camp out on the boat for overnight trips. You have never seen stars like what you see out in the dead of night from the Florida Middle Grounds. You wake up to brilliant sunrises and have incredible encounters with Dolphins, Sharks, Cobia, Sea Turtles and Goliath Groupers. One of special parts of our trips is to grill out our fresh catch. I can't explain why the food is so much better, but I swear that the best meal that you will ever have is a fresh grilled Grouper sandwich on my boat.
For the past three years we have been photographing our adventures. Here is the link: http://www.flickr.com/photos/darkislandfishingteam/ Enjoy! By the way, we love to show others why it is so great out there in our gulf. Give us a call and maybe we can take you out there sometime.
